What the job involves

A car battery starts the engine and powers the electronics when the engine is off. Batteries weaken with age, and cold Canadian winters often reveal a weak one.

The technician tests the old battery and the charging system, removes the old battery, cleans the terminals, installs a battery of the right size and type for your car, and checks that the alternator charges it properly. Some cars need the new battery registered with a scan tool.

Signs you need it

  • Slow cranking when you start the car, especially on cold mornings
  • A battery or charging warning light
  • Needing a boost to start
  • Corrosion around the battery terminals, or a swollen battery case
  • A battery test result showing it is weak

Questions to ask your shop

  • Did you test the battery and the charging system, and can I see the results?
  • Is the new battery the type my car needs, such as standard, EFB or AGM?
  • Is battery registration or electronics reset included if my car needs it?
  • What warranty comes with the battery, and is disposal of the old one included?

Frequently asked questions

Why do batteries fail more in winter?
Cold slows the chemical reaction inside the battery while the engine needs more power to start. A battery that was weak in the fall often fails on the first cold morning.
Can I just get a boost instead?
A boost can get you going, but if the battery is worn out it will keep failing. A test shows whether it needs replacing or the car has a charging problem.
Why do some batteries cost more?
Cars with start-stop systems or many electronics often need an AGM or EFB battery, which costs more than a standard one.
