What the job involves

The engine air filter stops dust and debris from getting into the engine. A clogged filter can reduce performance and fuel economy.

On most cars this is a quick job: the technician opens the air filter box, removes the old filter, checks the housing for debris and installs a new filter. Some engines take longer because the box is harder to reach.

Signs you need it

  • The filter looks dark or clogged when inspected
  • You drive often on dusty or gravel roads
  • Your owner’s manual or maintenance reminder says it is due
  • Reduced acceleration or poorer fuel economy

Questions to ask your shop

  • Can you show me the old filter?
  • Is the new filter the right part for my engine?
  • Is this a separate charge or part of another service?

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my air filter is dirty?
Ask the shop to show it to you. A dirty filter looks dark and is packed with dust and debris.
Can I replace the engine air filter myself?
On many cars, yes: the box opens with clips. Check your owner’s manual first.
Is the engine air filter the same as the cabin air filter?
No. The engine air filter cleans air going into the engine; the cabin air filter cleans air coming into the car through the vents.
