What the job involves

This job replaces the front brake pads and the front rotors, the discs the pads squeeze against. Rotors wear thinner over time and can warp or get grooved, and new pads work best on smooth rotors.

The technician removes the front wheels, calipers and old rotors, installs new rotors and pads, cleans and lubricates the hardware, and test-drives the car. Some shops resurface rotors instead of replacing them when they are thick enough.

Signs you need it

  • Vibration or pulsing in the steering wheel or brake pedal when braking
  • Grinding noises, or deep grooves you can see on the rotors
  • Rotors measured below the minimum thickness stamped on them
  • Worn pads that have damaged the rotors

Questions to ask your shop

  • Have the rotors been measured, and are they below the minimum thickness?
  • Could the rotors be resurfaced instead of replaced?
  • Are the rotors and pads economy, quality aftermarket or OEM?
  • What warranty comes with the parts and the labour?

Frequently asked questions

Why replace rotors instead of resurfacing them?
Resurfacing removes metal, so it only works when the rotor stays thicker than its minimum. Many rotors today are thin, and new ones can cost about the same as resurfacing.
What causes a shaking steering wheel when braking?
Uneven rotor wear or warping is a common cause. It can also come from loose wheels or suspension problems, so ask the shop to check.
Is this the same price as pads alone?
No. Rotors add parts and some labour, so expect it to cost more than pads alone.
