What the job involves

This job replaces the rear brake pads and the rear rotors. The rear brakes do less of the stopping than the front, so this job is usually needed less often.

The technician removes the rear wheels, calipers and rotors, installs new rotors and pads, and services the hardware. Cars with an electronic parking brake need a scan tool to retract it before the work.

Signs you need it

  • Grinding or scraping from the rear when braking
  • Rear rotors that are grooved, rusted or below their minimum thickness
  • Vibration when braking that the front brakes do not explain
  • A parking brake that does not hold well

Questions to ask your shop

  • Have the rear rotors been measured, and why do they need replacing?
  • Is electronic parking brake service included if my car has one?
  • Are the parts economy, quality aftermarket or OEM?
  • What warranty comes with the parts and the labour?

Frequently asked questions

Why are my rear rotors rusty?
Rear rotors do less work, so surface rust does not wear off as easily, especially after winter. Heavy rust or pitting can mean replacement.
Do rear rotors wear as fast as front rotors?
Usually not, because the front brakes do most of the stopping.
Can I replace only the rear pads?
Yes, if the rotors are still in good shape. Ask the shop to measure them.
