Where the price comes from

  • Middle of 2 published Canadian price guides: Franco Garage, Ottawa (Mar 2026) $60–100; YST Tuning, Mississauga (Apr 2026) $60–120. Read 2026-10-23.

What the job involves

A seasonal tire changeover swaps your summer or all-season tires for winter tires in the fall, and back again in the spring. This guide covers tires that are already mounted on their own wheels.

The technician removes one set of wheels, installs the other set, sets the tire pressures and tightens the wheel nuts to the correct torque. Many shops also check the tread and can store the off-season set for an extra fee.

Signs you need it

  • Cold weather is on the way and you still have summer or all-season tires on
  • Spring has arrived and your winter tires are still on
  • Your province or area requires winter tires for part of the year

Questions to ask your shop

  • Is the price for tires already on wheels, or do they need to be mounted and balanced?
  • Will you check tread depth and set the pressures?
  • Is tire storage available, and what does it cost?
  • Will you remind me to re-check the wheel nuts after the first drive?

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to have winter tires on their own wheels?
A second set of wheels costs money up front, but each changeover is usually quicker and cheaper than mounting and balancing the tires every season.
Do I have to use winter tires?
Quebec requires winter tires during its winter period, and some highways in British Columbia require winter tires or chains. Elsewhere they are strongly recommended for winter driving.
Why do changeover prices go up in the fall?
Shops are busiest just before the first snow, so book early.
