Where the price comes from
- Middle of 2 published Canadian price guides: Franco Garage, Ottawa (Mar 2026) $150–400; Tabangi Service Centre, Mississauga (Mar 2026) $150–350. Read 2026-10-23.
What the job involves
Spark plugs ignite the fuel in the engine. Over time they wear, which can cause misfires, rough running and poorer fuel economy.
The technician removes any covers or ignition coils, takes out the old plugs, installs new plugs of the type your engine needs and tightens them to the correct torque. On some engines the plugs are hard to reach, which takes more time.
Signs you need it
- Rough idling or a shaking engine
- Misfires or a flashing check-engine light
- Hard starting or slow acceleration
- Poorer fuel economy
- Your owner’s manual says the plugs are due
Questions to ask your shop
- Which spark plugs are you using, and do they match my owner’s manual?
- Does my engine need parts removed to reach the plugs?
- Will you check the ignition coils while the plugs are out?
- What warranty comes with the parts and the labour?
Frequently asked questions
Why does the price depend so much on the engine?
On some engines the plugs are right on top; on others, parts such as the intake need to come off first, which adds labour.
Should the ignition coils be replaced too?
Only if they are faulty. Ask the shop to test them rather than replacing them by default.
Does a flashing check-engine light mean bad spark plugs?
It often means a misfire, which can come from plugs, coils or other parts. Stop driving hard and have it checked soon.
