What the job involves

A synthetic oil change drains the old engine oil and refills the engine with fresh synthetic oil and a new oil filter. Many newer engines call for synthetic oil, and it is one of the most common jobs a shop does.

The technician drains the oil from the oil pan, replaces the oil filter, refills the engine with the grade your owner’s manual lists, and resets the oil-life reminder. Many shops also top up fluids and look over the tires, lights and wipers while the car is on the hoist.

Signs you need it

  • The oil-change reminder or maintenance light is on
  • The time or distance since the last change has reached what your owner’s manual recommends
  • The oil on the dipstick looks dark, gritty or low
  • A sticker from the last oil change shows it is due

Questions to ask your shop

  • Which oil grade and specification are you using, and does it match my owner’s manual?
  • Is a new oil filter included?
  • Are any extra fees added, such as disposal or shop supplies?
  • What else is included in the inspection, and will you call me before doing any other work?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need synthetic oil if my car came with it?
If your owner’s manual calls for synthetic oil, use it. Using the specified oil keeps the engine protected and helps keep the warranty valid.
Can I go longer between changes with synthetic oil?
Follow the interval in your owner’s manual or your car’s oil-life reminder. Severe conditions, such as short trips in winter or towing, can call for more frequent changes.
Why do prices vary so much between shops?
The amount of oil your engine holds, the oil specification, the filter and any added inspections or fees all change the price.
